La Fortuna vs Tamarindo: Volcano or Beach First

You are planning a trip to Costa Rica and you have a classic question. Should you start with the volcano in La Fortuna or the beach in Tamarindo? Both places are wonderful, but they offer very different experiences. I have spent time in both towns, and I want to help you decide which one fits your travel style first.

This is not about which is better. It is about what kind of vacation you want to have. La Fortuna is lush, rainy, and full of adventure. Tamarindo is sunny, dry, and built around the ocean. Here is how to think about your choice.

La Fortuna: The Volcano and the Rainforest

La Fortuna sits at the base of Arenal Volcano, an active stratovolcano that last erupted in 2010. The area is famous for its rainforest, hot springs, and waterfalls. You can hike to the base of the volcano, walk hanging bridges in the cloud forest, or swim in the cool pool at La Fortuna Waterfall. The weather here is unpredictable. You might get a sunny morning and a rainy afternoon. That is part of the charm. The air smells like wet earth and flowers. The wildlife is everywhere. Howler monkeys wake you up at dawn. Toucans fly between trees. If you love nature and don't mind a little rain, La Fortuna is your place.

Tamarindo: The Beach and the Sun

Tamarindo is on the Pacific coast in Guanacaste. It is a beach town with a strong surf culture. The sun is almost guaranteed. The dry season runs from December to April, and even in the green season you get more sun than rain. The main beach is long and wide, perfect for walking or learning to surf. The town has a relaxed, social vibe. You can watch the sunset from a beachfront restaurant or take a boat tour to see sea turtles. Tamarindo is easier for lounging and doing nothing. It is also more developed, with more restaurants and nightlife. If your goal is to lie on the sand and soak up the sun, Tamarindo wins.

How to Choose Which Comes First

Think about your energy level. If you arrive in Costa Rica excited to hike, zip line, and explore, start in La Fortuna. You will be active and tired at the end of the day. Then you can go to Tamarindo to rest and recover on the beach. If you want to ease into your trip, start in Tamarindo. Relax for a few days, then head to La Fortuna for adventure. I have done both routes. Starting with the volcano and ending at the beach is more common and it works well. You end your trip with sunsets and cold drinks.

The Practical Side: Getting Between Them

The drive from La Fortuna to Tamarindo takes about three to four hours. You can take a direct shuttle or rent a car. The road is mostly paved, but the last stretch near the coast has some hills and curves. It is a scenic drive through farmland and dry forest. You will see a big change in landscape. Green and wet becomes dry and golden. It is a nice way to see two sides of Costa Rica in one trip.

A Note on Timing

If you have only one week, I recommend spending four nights in La Fortuna and three in Tamarindo. That gives you enough time for a hike, a waterfall visit, and a hot spring soak in the rainforest. Then you get two full beach days. If you have ten days, you can add a day trip to Rio Celeste from La Fortuna or a boat tour in Tamarindo. Both towns are good bases for exploring nearby areas.

Your Next Step

Look at your flight arrival time. If you land in San Jose, La Fortuna is a 3 hour drive. Tamarindo is a 4 to 5 hour drive. If you land in Liberia, Tamarindo is only 1 hour away. Let your arrival airport guide your first stop. Then book your first two nights. You can always change your mind later, but having a plan helps you relax and enjoy the trip from the start.
