The Perfect 3 Day Arenal Itinerary

A relaxed, field tested three day plan for exploring Arenal and La Fortuna with honest advice on hiking, waterfalls, hot springs, and wildlife.

Three days in Arenal is just enough time to feel the rhythm of this place. You can see the volcano, soak in hot springs, hike to a waterfall, and spot wildlife without rushing. This itinerary is built on my own visits and conversations with local guides. It leaves room for rain, rest, and the unexpected.

This plan works for most fitness levels and budgets. You will need a rental car or reliable driver. Book accommodations and park entry ahead during high season. Let us get started.

Day 1: Arrival and the Volcano

Arrive in La Fortuna by midday. Drop your bags and eat a simple lunch at a soda near the central park. Then head to Arenal Volcano National Park. The main trail is the 1968 Trail, named for the eruption that shaped the landscape. It is an easy 2 to 3 hour walk over old lava flows. You will see the volcano cone clearly on a clear day. The trail ends at a viewpoint with a bench. Sit there for a while.

After the hike, drive to one of the public hot springs along the base of the volcano. The water is naturally heated by geothermal activity. Soak for an hour as the light fades. Do not expect fancy pools. Expect warm, mineral rich water with a view of the volcano. Return to town for dinner. Try a casado or fresh trout.

Day 2: Waterfall and Wildlife

Start early. Drive to La Fortuna Waterfall, about 15 minutes from town. The entrance fee is around $18 per person, indicative. You walk down 500 steps to the pool at the base. The water is cool and clear. Swim for 20 minutes. The climb back up is steep. Take your time.

After the waterfall, drive 20 minutes to Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. This is a network of suspension bridges and trails through secondary rainforest. Go mid morning when birds are active. You will see toucans, howler monkeys, and maybe a coati. The walk takes 1.5 to 2 hours. It is not difficult.

For lunch, stop at a roadside fruit stand for fresh coconut water and a mango. In the afternoon, visit the Arenal Observatory area for a short self guided walk on the old lava trails. The views of Lake Arenal are wide and quiet. End the day with a soak at a different hot spring. Tabacon is the most famous, but there are smaller, less crowded options nearby.

Day 3: Rio Celeste or a Sloth Walk

Choose your adventure. Option A is Rio Celeste in Tenorio Volcano National Park. Drive about 1.5 hours north. The trail is 3.5 miles round trip. The river turns a bright turquoise blue at the confluence. This is due to a chemical reaction between volcanic minerals. The water is not safe to swim in, but the color is unforgettable. Bring rain gear. It often rains there even when it is sunny in La Fortuna.

Option B is a morning sloth walk near La Fortuna. Several local guides offer walks on private reserves. You will see wild sloths, frogs, and snakes. It is a calm, slow paced activity. Perfect for a last day.

After your morning activity, have a late lunch in La Fortuna. Visit the artisan market for a souvenir. Then head to the airport or your next destination.
